St. Patty's Day 5k Race Report

I know, I have been MIA here. I have still been running, though :) I've stopped putting so much pressure on myself when it comes to logging every mile. It was taking some of the fun out of it!!!

Onto my latest Race Report:

I was really looking forward to running today's 5k. When a head cold started on Tuesday, I was pretty worried! Today, I could only half breath out my nose, so I figured I would set the bar low, for me, and would be happy with a time under 35min. It was a typical hot, humid Guam morning.

I took some Motrin this morning to knock down what felt like a bit of a fever. Other than my head, I felt good. The race itself was pretty uneventful. I had quite a mental battle going on in my head, though. I didn't decide to run the whole thing, without walk breaks, until about halfway through.

Listening to the long version of "Rockerfeller Skank" by Fatboy Slim got me through. I played it twice. That song paces me so well.

Once again, I tried to pick up my pace at the end, but I didn't think I did. My Garmin said otherwise.

Garmin time: 3.12 miles in 32:58
Sport Tracks Garmin Time: 3.19mi in 32:59
I still don't get the difference...LOL

With about 1/4 mi left in the race, the girl in front of me slowed to a walk. I gave her a little, "Come-on, you are almost there," and she started running again. She ended up finishing a few seconds in front of me but I felt good that I helped her come in under 33:00.

My last 5k race was 33:32 for 3.01 miles so it was a good improvement. I ran the whole thing this time. Now I am wondering how much better my time could have been without the cold!!! My breathing was really labored. I was huffing and puffing at the end. I never really have that problem. It's my muscles that usually crap out on me. Today, the opposite was true!

Here is my SportTracks info w/ quarter mile splits (click for larger view):

I dind't realize Garmin could do all that fancy stuff. My runs just show up as a yellow dotted line when I log them on my computer. I must be missing something.

I need to buy one but have been putting it off because there are no good maps available for Mumbai:(

Maybe I will pick one up during my trip to Vegas in April. That said, let me check out their website now.

Hi Jenn,

I got here by "mistake" googling for Running Guam and I found the blog very addictive. I mean, it is very hard to live far from home and also find a motivation to do something for ourselves when you have kids to take care of.
All my best wishes for your path.
You are very strong, so you will achieve your goal.
